Schopenhauer, the “Will,” and the Future of Leadership Development

I dusted off some old books the other day and revisited Arthur Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Representation. Schopenhauer believed that humans are driven by an endless "Will"—a constant cycle of desire, achievement, and new desires that can leave us perpetually striving.

But what if that Will is redirected?

In leadership, the transformation looks like this:

Will → Action → Contribution → Value

The same ambition that drives us toward promotion, recognition, and success can be redirected toward developing employees, building stronger teams, improving culture, and creating opportunities for others.

Consider a Plant Manager. Early in their career, they may focus on personal achievement. As they mature as leaders, that same drive becomes focused on mentoring supervisors, improving safety, and developing future leaders.

The greatest leaders don't simply achieve success—they multiply it through others.

Leadership development and mentoring transform ambition into contribution, creating value that extends far beyond individual accomplishments.

That's the kind of legacy worth building.
