This past weekend, I set out on a drive from Nashville to Greenville—not really thinking about Father’s Day, just focused on the road ahead.

As I passed through a part of Georgia, I was reminded that one of my sons goes to college nearby. We hadn’t spoken in about six months—the kind of silence that many parents know too well, especially after a divorce. If you’ve been there, you know how complex and delicate those relationships can become.

Still, without overthinking it, I picked up the phone and called him. I wasn’t sure he’d answer. But he did.

I asked him if he wanted to grab something to eat. He chose sushi, and just like that, we met up. No big plans. No expectations. Just a spontaneous moment of reconnection. And it hit me afterward:

I only saw my son that day for one reason and one reason only—I asked.
